The Mountain Gorilla
The Mountain Gorillas live in the Congo Basin. They are a keystone species, meaning that they play an essential role in the community. They feed on bamboo and fruit, as well as invertebrates and termites. However, deforestation has decreased their habitat. They have also been the target of charcoal traders who kill them in retaliation for stricter on preserving forests.
As the gorilla population decreases, it affects the community and ecosystem. When gorillas feed on fruit, they inadvertently disperse the fruit's seeds as they travel. Without the gorillas, there would be less fruit trees for the gorillas and other animals to eat. Also, insects and bamboo populations would increase, allowing other species who feed on them to also increase.
