Resources
Deforestation impacts the forest in many ways. It directly affects a major resource for food--the fruit trees that many animals feed on are cut down. It can also impact the climate. This means that when trees are cut down, rainfall patterns could change. Rainfall is an important resource in the Congo because it allows the plants and trees to grow. If rainfall patterns changed, this would affect how well these plants are able to survive. Many plants cannot adjust to even slight changes in climate, and over time, would die off.
Competition
Many animals depend on fruit trees for food, including gorillas and chimpanzees. However, there are now fewer fruit trees and fewer gorillas. This makes it possible for the chimpanzees to out-compete the gorillas for food.
Families of gorillas who roam the forest will also find a shorter supply of fruit to eat. They will have to travel farther and walk for longer in order to eat enough food to sustain themselves.
